Melting Ice with Salt

This week we talked about how salt is used in cold countries to remove the ice and snow from the roads. We did an experiment to see if it really works! (with some help from a few penguins and polar bears) We first looked at the salt and even tasted it. We then sprinkled salt onto some ice and watched it melt into holes and canals. Just to make it a bit more colorful, we used syringes to squirt different colors onto the ice. The most fun was to hold the ice up to the light and see all the different shapes the ice had melted into.

1. Melting the ice with salt. (so cold!)

2. Adding some color with syringes.

3. Looking at our beautiful ice in the sun.

Look at all the holes that the salt made in this ice! I'm glad everyone had a nice time- see you next week!
